ABSTRACT

In this article, the theoretical and experimental justification for the formation of doubly charged ions in the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) for a number of elements has been investigated. Using field equations and thermodynamic modeling methods, the formation efficiency of singly and doubly charged ions of elements with the lowest first and second ionization potentials has been calculated. The results of theoretical calculations were compared with experimental data obtained on an Agilent Technologies mass spectrometer. The accuracy of the calculations and the applicability of the proposed approach to predict the formation efficiency of M²⁺ ions in ICP-MS analysis have been demonstrated. Keywords: inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, doubly charged ions, ionization efficiency, thermodynamic modeling, second-order ionization, argon plasma, second ionization potential of elements.
